Wickersley Old Village Cricket Club has been in existence since the 19th century (circa 1892) moving to Northfield Lane in 1935. The ground was also grazing land, and was shared with the local cattle!
1970 saw our admission to the South Riding League, and the winning of the 'C' Division title.
In 1977 and with the imminent purchase of the land by property developers the
club was able to buy the ground from Whitbread breweries. 1989 saw the
demolition of the old wooden pavilion to make way for a new modern club
house with much improved facilities.
With the combination of an influx of new faces at the club, sheer hard
work and determination, and a hugely successful partnership with Whitbread
breweries, 1995 saw the opening of the new electronic scoreboard still in
use today. And in the same year the club went on to win its first league championship, with more to follow in 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005.
In 2008 the club looks as strong as ever. Determined to succeed, develop
and move forward both on and off the pitch. With new players arriving and
ground improvement plans well underway, the 2008 season should be an
enjoyable and successful one. |
